I have a theory that when you need to answer life's questions, all you need to do is look down at your hands. Here's why: Imagine you're on a roller coaster - this roller coaster is life. Notice who, from all the different areas of your life, is around you for the thrill ride, the adrenaline rush? Many friends, no doubt.
Of course they are! People will happily ride with you and be your companion through the peaks of life. It's easy to be with someone who gives you an adrenaline rush, a high, a good time.
But true friends are found In the heart sinking dips, the unexpected jolts and curves, the the upside down, the sickening twists and crushing lows on your roller coaster.
It is almost always a 'sinking in your stomach' feeling as you spiral downward, and you realise that the people you loved having with you during the rush of heart-pounding highs of the ride with you, have now fallen away, chased another thrill rider or become quieter and more distant.
The real soul crushing comes when you look over and see a friend catch your eye, seeing the fear on your face....and then they look away.
As your heart sinks, you begin to give up hope, and you look at your hands in despair....look closely.
There may be just one or two people who have reached over, and taken your hand, and held on to you tightly.
No words are needed, just a smile, an understanding, and a faith that the hand holding yours, is a person of true integrity, a compassion soul and a person of value and pure kindness.
The hands holding yours brings the feeling of calm surrender, the feeling of being wrapped in the warmest, softest blanket which has been woven with a silver thread of peace.
Once you look up and discover with new eyes, the owner of the hands that hold yours, never let them go.
These hands are the symbol of a lifetime friendship that will hold strong through every peak and every valley life has to offer.
The only thing left to do, is squeeze them tight in return, and let them know that when the time comes, you will offer your hands, to them in return.
